The Reality of Writing a Book #TypeACon #liveblogging ~ megan BLOGS

The Good

  • leaving a legacy= bragging rights
  • fun side of promotions
  • working with a publishing house= team work
  • gaining new knowledge
  • confession! most of the good stuff comes afterward

The Bad

“You keep using the word ‘royalties’, I don’t think it means what you think it means”

  • the money: an advance gives you the money up front, but also the pressure to sell a certain quantity
  • self-doubt: intimidating to work with publisher (publishers influencing your content to make it more marketable)
  • answering to thers: you aren’t the boss
  • a book is not a long blog post= 2 separate experiences

The Ugly

The Ugly: The Reality of Writing a Book #TypeACon #liveblogging ~ megan BLOGS

  • deadlines= book=life sucking vampire
  • business= some things are our of your control
  • marketing= they’re counting on YOU
  • obsessing= rankings & comparing yourself to others

Good, Bad, Ugly? ALL THREE

  • editing process= crying about it, learning from it
  • book take two= redoing entire book, but liked it better

Be Your Own Biggest Advocate, Always!

Nobody – NOBODY – cares as much about your book as much as you do.

Nice information, There is obviously a lot. Your points are very valuable and knowledgeable. Thanks for sharing this great blog with us.

Thanks for this recap, Megan! I missed this session. Did they talk at all about self publishing? Or just working with a publisher?

@tceniccola They referenced self-publishing in passing but it was mostly about having a book published through traditional channels. This is basically the recap of their slideshow, I'm afraid for a first-time live-blogger, it's all I could muster.

@MeganBroutian @tceniccola Are you kidding? You did amazing! I couldn't even tweet during the sessions let alone try liveblogging! I was just curious. Thanks for sharing:-)
